Latin American Protestant Churches Facing Neoliberal Globalization

René Krüger, Editor
Publication sponsored by The Lutheran World Federation, the Alliance of Presbyterian and Reformed Churches of Latin America, and the University Institute ISEDET
ISEDET, Buenos Aires, 2007

This book brings together the most representative texts of two books edited in Spanish in 2004 and 2006 with Declarations, the theological reflection, proposals, testimonies, practices, and liturgical materials, in which the Churches of the Lutheran and the Reformed-Presbyterian families of Latin America and The Caribbean analyze and confront from different perspectives the roots, characteristics and destructive effects of the neoliberal system on the life of people, communities, institutions and environment in Latin America. The texts also cover possible alternatives, seeking to build a counter hegemonic thought based on Scripture and the Reformation principles, which can sustain a practice that makes justice and fullness of life for all creation possible – and not the accumulation of more wealth and the limitless waste for a few.

Alter the edition of both these books in Spanish, arose the idea of publishing a version in English which would contribute to the dialogue with our sisters and brothers in Churches and ecumenical institutions of the Northern Hemisphere.

The structure of this book is as follows:
I. The Voices of the Churches (with messages and declarations of the Churches, the Conference of Bishops and Presidents of the Lutheran Family in Latin America, the Alliance of Presbyterian and Reformed Churches of Latin America; and the international family).
II. Reflections (with articles which cover the issue from different perspectives, dealing with theological, historical, ecclesiological, ethical and situational matters).
III. Testimonies and contributions for community discussion (with contributions written from the experience of the base of neoliberal globalization).
IV. Celebration (with two main articles, a collection of liturgical resources and some sermons).

The editorial team was formed by representatives of both confessional families: René Krüger, Martín Junge, Ángel Furlan, Gerardo C. Oberman, and Germán Zijlstra. This book is published thanks to the generous economical contributions of t he Lutheran World Federation ; the United Evangelical Lutheran Church of Germany ( Vereinigte Evangelisch-Lutherische Kirche Deutschlands , VELKD); the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Am erica (ELCA); the American Waldensian Society (AWS); and the Alliance of Presbyterian and Reformed Churches of Latin America ( Alianza de Iglesias Presbiterianas y Reformadas de América Latina , AIPRAL ).

Deliberately the editorial team refused to write a chapter with conclusions, because this is a creative process which is open to searches and experimentation, in the midst of a history loaded with suffering, yet carried out by people sustained by their faith and based on the promise of fullness of life, which sustains the Churches in Latin America as they confront the destructive impact of neoliberal globalization.
